Climate: The New Abnormal
You are here because the climate is on your radar. This is a good sign: it shows that you have realised that something strange is happening to the Earth and this worries you, or at least affects you.
Climate collapse is no longer a remote possibility, it is an ever-present emergency. We only have to look at the news, open our windows at home, or take a look at the cost of our supermarket shopping to see that these kinds of events - extreme drought, flooding, wildfires, thawing and storms - are here to stay. Some scientists have been calling this the “new normal”, but we prefer to call it the “new abnormal”. This trap of our own making leaves us feeling helpless when faced with the enormity of the problems, making it even harder to reflect calmly on the solutions we should implement.
New Abnormal is an invitation to take a step back and make sense of how we got here, consider what can we expect over the horizon, and rethink the way we inhabit and engage in the world. It speaks of the need for us to start making big personal and collective changes, and mobilizing as many people as possible who are in favour of a sustainable world and greater social justice.
During your visit, don’t forget that this exhibition is showing you your future. There is no time left to reverse the climate processes already in motion: some have already passed the point of no return. But we can still mitigate the causes and adapt. In fact, we have no choice other than to face the crisis - it will take bravery, determination and creativity.
